Pain and Nutrition in Dementia and Alzheimer’s (PANDA)

About the PANDA study

Chronic pain and Alzheimer’s Disease are related, major health concerns and that have increasing evidence supporting their overlapping etiologies and pathologies, and there is an urgent need to understand the mechanisms contributing to the development of these comorbid conditions as the population ages. Epigenetic modifications contributing to immune system dysfunction have been highlighted as a critical factor contributing to both chronic pain and AD/ADRD development. The proposed work will elucidate nutrigenomic mechanisms associated with related to pain and cognition, assess nutritional supplementation on epigenetic mechanisms related to pain and cognitive decline in older adults, and findings will have strong implications for advancement of pain management and AD/ADRD prevention strategies in older adult populations. The first phase of this study aims to assess thee variables in cognitively intact older adults with chronic knee an/or back pain. See this study on the NIH Reporter website.
